Exercises
Types of Exercises Offered
Orientation Exercise
This is a structured "meeting", using a variety of presentation methods to review the emergency operation plan, requiring minimal preparation time and having the ability to include all levels of personal in a low-stress and low cost environment for groups discussion.
Drill
A Drill is a coordinated, supervised activity that tests, develops or maintains skills in a single emergency response function. This exercise is used to provide training on new equipment, to develop new policies or procedures, or to practice and maintain current skills. Examples include fire drills for:
- school children,
- communication drills
- and Emergency Operating Center (EOC) notification drills.
A Drill usually involves a field response to include communications, equipment and resources that would be used in a real emergency.
Tabletop Exercise
This is an activity in which key leaders assigned to emergency management roles and responsibilities are gathered to discuss, in a non-threatening environment, simulated emergency situations. It is an ideal method for problem solving.
Functional Exercise
This is designed to test and evaluate the capability of an organization to respond to a simulated emergency. This level of exercise is designed to test and evaluate the skills and capabilities of several department/agencies to coordinate their decision making and response activities.
Full-Scale Exercise
This is used to test and evaluate most functions in the Emergency Operation Plan as realistically as possible in order to respond to a given hazard/emergency. It is an opportunity to test seldom-used resources that the organization may have, but due to the specialized nature of the equipment and training are not employed on a daily basis.
In-box/E-mail Based Exercises
The In-box/E-mail Exercise is an exercise conducted using scripted communications that require an action response from the participants to respond to a simulated emergency.
These exercise train personnel in the correct procedures and priorities for handling messages, tasks, action and information. The In-box/E-mail exercise is more difficult to control and can be hard to track actions of the participants.
